ex HMAS Canberra Reef - VARS Update - March 2008 |
 |
VARS Update - 29th March 2008
In Brief
The Deed of Gift is moving closer to signature by both State and Federal Governments. A major milestone has now been achieved with the site position now agreed between all parties. This agreement was required prior to the signing of the Deed document. It is expected that this second major milestone is now only weeks from being completed.
Sub-Committee Reports
Site Management - Convenor: Alan Beckhurst
A white paper has now been prepared outlining a possible site management plan. Input was sought from across the dive industry in preparation of this white paper. Government authorities have now appointed a consultant to further investigate and provide a report.
Ship Preparation - Convenor: Jason Salter
As outline in the last update the bulk of this work will occur once the tenderer has been formally announced. At this stage the key tasks will be to coordinate with the successful tenderer to ensure that ship is correctly prepared to maximise diving enjoyment and safety.
Fund Raising / Membership - Convenor: Warrick McDonald
VARS is now approaching the stage when volunteers will be able to become active. Additionally, it is also the time when further funds are likely to be required as the work ramps up.
Marketing / Promotion - Convenor: Bryan McGoldrick
The groundwork for a marketing plan has been put together. Activities are now underway to secure appropriate funding to put the plan into action.
Site Location
Agreement on a resting place for the Canberra has now been reached between all stakeholders. The agreed site is in an area about 1 nautical mile WNW of the J4. Average depth is 28 metres. This will mean that the wreck will be able to be accessed by all levels of divers as the main deck will be in 18 metres.

VSAG 15-Nov-07 Meeting - Mac Gregory |
 |
Over time the Victorian Sub-Aqua Group (VSAG), www.vsag.org.au, has had some excellent guest presenters. At the November monthly meeting on Thursday, 15th November, we have an extraordinary guest presenter!
Victorian Sub-Aqua Group Presents:
MAC GREGORY on Naval, Maritime and Australian History
Mac Gregory joined the Royal Australian Naval College as a 13 year old in 1936.
Mac was sent to sea in 1939 as war was impending. He spent the total war at sea or in the UK doing his Sub Lieutenant's Course.
Mac served in the 8 inch cruisers, "Australia", "Canberra" and "Shropshire".
Mac was Officer of Watch on the "Canberra” when the Battle of Savo Island commenced at 0143 on 9th August 1942. Was it the Japanese who sank the "Canberra" during that intense battle?
Mac was on the "Shropshire" for the Japanese surrender at Tokyo Bay on 2nd September 1945.
Mac has exciting stories about the ships, submarines and historic war events that are fascinating to say the least.
Mac's account of the Japanese Mini Submarines attack on Sydney Harbour is riveting!!!
Mac is an excellent presenter, reading from well prepared, very detailed script and pictures.
If you think you've read or heard all the true accounts of some famous war events, Mac Gregory may have more for you!!!
For a very special evening with a very special naval historian, sailor and Australian war veteran:
JOIN MAC GREGORY AT VSAG
WHEN:
8pm Thursday, 15th November 2007
WHERE:
Bell's Hotel
157 Moray Street corner Coventry Street

Vic divers in deep sea search for dead NSW diver
David Barret
November 04, 2007 12:00am
TWO Victorian scuba experts are leading a bid to retrieve the body of a diver who died in 125m of water 14km off the NSW south coast.
Deep sea specialists Craig Howell, 42, and John Dalla-Zuanna, 51, arrived yesterday to spearhead the retrieval attempt and to try to solve the mystery of what happened to Sven Paepke off Bermagui.
Mr Paepke's body has been on the sea floor for eight days after he lost consciousness and died during a dangerous deep descent.
Police have been unable to recover the 42-year-old man's body because no police diver is qualified to dive that deep.

Aussie in Gallipoli sub dive mishap |
 |
Story in the SMH
An Australian diver is in hospital in Turkey after getting into trouble during an expedition to examine a World War I submarine that sank during the Gallipoli campaign.
Divers from the joint Turkish-Australian expedition had been studying the HMAS AE2, which was sunk in the Sea of Marmara in 1915, for the past four days.
One of the divers experienced difficulties close to the surface shortly after entering the water, an expedition spokesman said.
